PRODICOS is the first tool created in the framework of a co-operation program between the Department of Informatics - University of Athens and the Department of Classics and Philosophy - University of Cyprus under the title «Development of a toolbox for the aid of research in the Classics».
The aim of this program is to develop and evaluate technical tools providing IT based modes of research in the Classics focusing on the following areas:
- The empowerment of traditional research methods in Classical Philology with the use of computing techniques.
- The access to a wide range of existing resources for the Classics varying from a single electronic text to large bodies of textual data (such as the TLG or the PHI databases).
- The exploitation of existing tools that are standard equipment for literary scholars today.(Word processing programs, bibliographic databases etc)
Additional goals are:
- To promote co-operative research in the Classics
- To reduce time and cost for research.
- To enable users-classicists to undertake some development work

PRODICOS is a database dealing with philological information . This database can be utilized on the stages preceding the outcome of research (collection, sorting, categorisation, evaluation, processing of the material) where empirical methods are usually employed. PRODICOS provides access to a diversity of electronic resources permitting the creation of a «card file» where the classicists can store and retrieve bibliographic and other information. A special feature of this application is the possibility to import data and searching results from the TLG via the read and search program SNS. Beside complete bibliographical data the program can store summaries, keywords, indexes and other text-related information useful to researchers  enabling the user to perform a number of tasks such as the creation of individual bibliographies on topics of his/her interest. All information are printable and can be exported for further use (e.g. in MS-Word). Personal notes may also be added. PRODICOS has been created according to the requirements of the users-classicists and it can serve a collaborative research team helping the organization of the tasks within a group.

PRODICOS has been tested at the University of Cyprus and applied successfully to the study of Thucydides. The project  "A Critical Bibliography of Classical Scholarship 1965 - 1995. An electronic database" was at the same time a test for the application and an independent project for the study of a major classical author. As a test it took PRODICOS to its extremes, trying every feature available, thereby detecting bugs and showing possibilities for improvements, especially in the fields of both user-friendliness and adaptation to the philological needs. This presentation will give an account of the program and our experiences with PRODICOS, as well as a demonstration of its capabilities and an outlook on further plans e.g. the presentation of the project on the Internet and its final destination as internationally accessible tool for scholars and students who have an interest in Thucidides.
